1925 – 2012
He was born in Bay Shore, L.I., New York on February 15, 1925 the son Alfred R and Marion (Brow) Hubbard. He married Olga C. Sturek on August 6, 1973 in Lindenhurst, L.I. He was first married to Ann Dinga in 1946, and they had three sons. This marriage ended in divorce after 25 years.
Ted served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946. While in the Navy he served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Yorktown CV-10 (also known as the “Fighting Lady”), and now in a museum in Patriots Point, SC). He was awarded a commendation for bravery while the ship was under attack by the Japanese. He also received the Conspicuous Service Award from NY State for his heroism.
He moved from Long Island to upstate in 1973, and settled in Mundale, NY for 18 months before moving to Walton, and then to his present address in the town of Davenport.
Ted was a volunteer fireman for over fifty years, and was the 40th man to start up the West Islip Fire Department. Presently, he is an honorary member of the Walton Fire Department. He also was a firearms safety instructor for over 40 years.
He worked as a mechanic for Sun Oil Company in Oceanside, L.I., for many years; and for S.J.Bailey & Sons as a night supervisor for 17 years, and then the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years, until health issues forced him to resign.
Ted was a member of the Delhi American Legion Post, and a life member of VFW Post 1206, Oneonta, and a life member of the USS Yorktown Assoc., as well as the National Rifle Assoc.
He is survived by his wife, Olga Hubbard of Oneonta; his children, Alfred “Butch” (Rose) Hubbard of Oneonta, Walter A. Hubbard of Salisbury, NC, Ted R. (Rose) Hubbard of Maryland, NY, Donna Rachiele of Oneonta, and his beloved cat and companion, “Kitty Boy.”
He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, and a brother, Walter R. Hubbard of Corinth, TX.
A funeral service will be held on Friday December 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Rockwell, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home on Thursday December 20, 2012 from 5 to 7 PM at which time the family will be in attendance.
