Arthur E. ‘Art’ Solberg, Jr.

Solberg, Arthur Edward Jr. “Art” who resided in Bloomington, MN at the Masonic Home passed away at the age of 97 on Mar 27th, 2020. Art was the oldest of four children born to his parents, Arthur E. Solberg, Sr and Nellie Solberg and was born on August 5th, 1922. He had 2 brothers, Jim Solberg and Bill Solberg, and 1 sister, Marilyn Kursu. Marilyn is the only surviving sibling. Art married Ilene in 1947. They had four children, Lynnda (Karl Stabenow), Jay (Vivian), Gail (Keith Pahl) and Dan (Marci), were grandparents to nine grandchildren and were grandparents to fifteen great-grandchildren. Art will be cremated and his remains placed at the Fort Snelling Cemetery alongside his wife who preceded him. Art’s son, Jay, and son-in-law Keith, also preceded his death. Art was a retired Navy Commander with service from 1943 to 1963 with over 20 years of active service. He served in WWII and afterwards in the Naval Reserves as a Full Time pilot in the TARs program. Over his years of Navy Service, he qualified to fly over 20 different planes and was carrier qualified. During his Navy career he served in the Air Wings on the carriers Hornet and Yorktown. He flew one of the first jets in and out of the Minneapolis Airport. His Navy career included assignments in the Pacific theater, California, Colorado, Texas, Illinois and Minnesota. Art’s decorations include the Naval Reserve Medal, National Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal. After retiring from the Navy, Art was hired by Western Oil where he continued flying. Art enjoyed spending time at his Wisconsin lake home with children and grandchildren and winters in Cape Coral, FL. He was an avid hunter and golfer.
