1935 – 2024
Lorry Baltimar Atencio, 89, Born May 15, 1935, in Park View New Mexico, died June 13, in Silverdale, Washington.
He enjoyed his family with everything he had. He really enjoyed all sports and was a huge Raiders football and Los Angeles Dodger baseball fan. He was on an Ogden Adult baseball team and his kids enjoyed going to watch him play when they were young. He also loved camping, fishing, hunting, and traveling with his family. He also enjoyed golfing with his family and friends and especially with his railroad buddies; He was an amazing dancer, bowler, swimmer, and a dedicated Catholic Parishioner.
Lorry was born in 1935 to Eudoro (Edward) and Stella Atencio. He loved them both very much. They lived on a farm, and everyone in the family worked very hard, and he had many jobs to help. They moved to Ogden Utah where, as the eldest child, continued to work many jobs to help his family. He often reminisced on the good times along with the hard times in New Mexico and in Utah with his family and friends. He was always a very hard worker throughout his life.
Lorry graduated from Ogden High School in Ogden Utah in 1953. He joined the Navy in 1955. He served 22 years both active and reserves. He served aboard the USS Yorktown CVA-10 with Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 10. Last rank was Petty Officer 1st Class. He earned the good conduct medal, meritorious unit commendation 2nd award, commendation from Flag Officer Jan 1959. Upon his return he married Elsie Salas and had 3 children. He worked at the United States Post office then at Hill Air Force Base as an Instrument Mechanic for 30 years.
In his retirement, he volunteered at the Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah Food Distribution Center, Food Pantry. He really enjoyed volunteering and often was the first person there each morning. It was a priority to be there almost every day, he bonded with the people he volunteered with as well as those in need. He was a Spanish translator to help those out who didn’t speak English. He was very proud to volunteer.
Lorry was preceded in death by his loving wife Elsie Mary (Salas) Atencio. They were married 41 years until her death in 2000, Edward Atencio (dad), Stella Atencio (mom), Angie Casados (sister), Arlene Kennedy (sister), and Tony Atencio (brother).
Surviving is Marilyn Zamora (daughter), Lawrence Atencio (son), and Greg Atencio (son), 8 grandkids and 12 great grandkids, Leroy Atencio (brother), Stella Smith (sister), Linda Smith (sister) and Cindy Martinez (sister).
Church services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic church in West Haven Utah on June 27th at 11:00. Following the service will be internment and Military Funeral Honors at 12:30 at the Roy City Cemetery and a Celebration of Life at St. Mary’s Catholic Church immediately after the honors.
