Born in Chattanooga, TN, Dan moved as a child to the Washington DC area, where he became an Eagle Scout. He remained in the DC area until 2000 when he moved to Davidson, NC. He earned dual BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Management from the University of Colorado where he was in the NROTC.
He was commissioned as an Ensign in 1953 and served in Active Duty on the Yorktown as the 7th Division Officer in the Gunnery Department, moving to Ready Reserve in 1955. He retired as a Captain, USNR, in 1986. During his time in the USNR he served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, CINCLANTFLT Staff, and the Office of Naval Research. Dan was awarded several medals for his service including the Navy Commendation Medal.
Dan continued his affiliation with the Yorktown as a member of the USS Yorktown Association Board of Directors and loved attending Reunions.
In civilian life Dan worked for many years for the Librascope Corporation (eventually part of Lockheed Martin), as a Technical Program Manager for numerous NASA Space Flight Programs and DOD electro-optics and weapons programs. At the time of his retirement he was Director of Business Development, responsible for liaising with both US and International Navies on shipboard combat systems.
Dan loved flying and maintained his private pilot’s license. He also loved travel, skiing, and following Davidson College Men’s Basketball.
Dan passed away January 25, 2021. He was predeceased by his wife Ann Orwiler Englehardt. He is survived by his son, Brooks (Kari), daughter Amy (John), and his 4 adored grandchildren
