James Allen Pilling, 98, of Wallingford, CT, husband of 61 years of the late Gloria (Crisafi) Pilling, passed away January 11, 2021 at Masonicare of Wallingford. James was born in New Haven, CT on May 29, 1922, a son of the late James and Grace (Nold) Pilling. After graduating West Haven High School in 1940, James joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and served with Air Group One attached to the USS Yorktown. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for action during the first battle of the Philippine Sea. He joined the Connecticut Light & Power Company in 1958 as a copy writer in the advertising department and graduated from Quinnipiac College in 1965 with a B.S. in Marketing. He retired as manager of community relations for Northeast Utilities (Eversource) in 1984, having received regional and national awards in print, radio, and television advertising. James was an avid golfer and fondly remembered his hole-in-one while golfing with his grandson in Florida, where he spent 20 years of his retirement.
The family would like to thank the devoted staff at Masonicare for their many years of caring attention for James. James is survived by his daughter, Victoria Sammis and her husband, Peter, of Wallingford; his son, Brian Pilling and his wife, Sue, of Sagamore Beach, MA; his grandson, Bradley Sammis of Wallingford, CT; his granddaughters, Marcie Taylor of Boston, MA, Bridgette Pilling of Rocklin, CA and Callie McOsker and her husband, David, of Dover, MA; and his great-grandsons Alexander Styczynski of Rocklin, CA and James McOsker of Dover, MA. He was predeceased by his brothers, William and Charles “Lee” Pilling, and his sister, Ellen Barnes.
As per James’ request, services and interment in East Lawn Cemetery are private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in James’ memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
