Robert M. Henry 1938 – 2010

Robert Merle Henry, 72, of North Platte, passed away on Aug. 14, 2010, at his home at Lake Maloney.


Bob was born March 11, 1938, at Grant City, Mo., to Merle and Helen (Boltz) Henry. When he was young, the family moved to Nebraska and settled in Hastings where he graduated from Hastings High School in 1956. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy on June 4, 1956.
Bob served in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Yorktown as an air traffic controller. After his discharge in 1960, he returned to Hastings, where he went to work for the Nebraska Public Power System.
On Sept. 2, 1960, Bob married Carolyn Johnson at Hastings where they made their home. They later moved to York, and then to North Platte where Bob continued working with NPPD until his retirement in 2000. Four children were born to this union, Mick, Cherise, Tom and Denise. On Sept. 2 Bob and Carolyn would have celebrated their 50th anniversary.
Bob enjoyed living at the lake, fishing and having his grandchildren out to visit. He was an avid reader and had most all the Louis L’amour books and loved John Wayne movies. Bob was a big Husker fan and a charter member of the York Eagles.
Bob is survived by his wife, Carolyn M., of North Platte; his daughters, Cherise (Doran) Mitchell and Denise Young, all of North Platte; his sons, Michael “Mick” (Lorie) Henry, of Lincoln, and Tom (Diana) Henry, of North Platte; seven grandchildren, Staci, Michael, Bobby and Jennifer Henry, all of Lincoln, and Trevor Young, Casey Mitchell and Cameron Schuett, all of North Platte; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Brooklynne; a sister, Evelyn (Lee) Layher, of Grand Island; a brother, Ken (Marcia), of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two brothers-in-law, Melvin (Bev) Johnson and Bob (Jeneane) Johnson, all of Hastings; and several nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Petr.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Ron Thompson of NPPD in Aurora officiating. The family requests casual dress for the service.
Cremation will follow and inurnment will be at a later date at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., today and Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday.
