1924 – 2024
Leroy Setzer, 100, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at Madison Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Haywood County and born on March 25, 1924, to the late Raymond and Estelle Hyde Setzer. He is also preceded in death by his wife Margaret “Maggie” Kirkpatrick Setzer who passed away in 1998, an infant son Neil, sister Betty Ferguson, two brothers Bob and Joel Setzer and a half-brother Edwin Allison.
Leroy served in the US Navy giving aviation support aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and retired after 22 years as a Chief Petty Officer. He then retired as a Customer Service Manager for Sears and Roebuck after 20 years of service.
Leroy was a Mason for 72 years and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and most of all his family and country.
He is survived by his daughter Gail Setzer, a son Greg Setzer (Michelle) and granddaughter Maggie Setzer Temple (Andrew), two grandsons Ben and Jack Temple and a special friend Donnie Phillips.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be rendered. Interment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Park Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends between 1-1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
