Dear Yorktown Association Members,
Your Board of Directors has met twice this spring to discuss the business of the Association. The April 16, 2020 meeting addressed many topics and issues facing the Association in the near term and one of the most important was whether we would have a Reunion this year given the current virus pandemic gripping the country. The board elected to defer this decision from April 16 until May 27 so we could gather more information concerning the COVID 19 impact on the country.
At the May 27 meeting, each board member expressed their personal opinion and voted on the question. The decision is to cancel the October 15-17, 2020 Reunion. This was an extremely difficult decision for the board to decide on, but we feel it is in the best interest, health and well-being of our membership. We have no idea what will happen over the next few months, but we expect large gatherings and travel to continue to be a problem for everyone. We know that canceling the 2020 reunion is not what anyone wanted but we appreciate your trust in our board to do what was in the best interest for all of us.
The board also voted on the dates for our new 72nd reunion in 2021. The tentative dates will be October 13-16, and we look forward to creating an amazing weekend for our crew and your family/friends.
Throughout these many coming months ahead the Association leadership will be working on bringing to the membership other means and methods for staying in touch with each other and maybe even increase our participation by reaching some crew members and their families who traditionally have not been reunion attendees.
As many of you know the use of virtual communication has exploded these past few months as a side effect of the many COVID 19 “shelter in place” policies put into place by our various city, county, state and federal governments. Your Association leadership will now begin to start working to create a Virtual Experience for you in 2020 that we hope you will find interesting and worthwhile. What will this be exactly? We are not yet sure. We are open to suggestions. As this is new for all of us, every idea is welcome, so please don’t hesitate to send us your suggestions. Or better yet, join our team to make it happen.
One area that deserves special attention in this message is our Memorial service. Our current plan is that we will hold the Memorial Service aboard Yorktown in October, 2020 (exact date is currently TBD). This Memorial Service will be a much smaller event than our normal Memorial Service and we will begin to work on possibly live streaming the event and/or filming it and putting it on our website, Facebook and/or YouTube.
For planning purposes we request that any family wishing to disburse the ashes of their loved one alongside YORKTOWN, please plan on doing so at the 2021 Reunion as we will not be disbursing ashes at the 2020 Memorial service. For families comfortable in traveling to Charleston for personal reasons and wanting to attend the 2020 Memorial service, and making your own arrangements, you will be welcome.
You may check the web site and Facebook over the next few weeks for more information about our Virtual Experience in 2020 and any other upcoming events we develop. If there is anything we can do for you or your family at this time, please reach out.
Thank you for your continued support. God Bless and Stay Safe.
