Virgil A. Lukens, 92, of Herrin, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023 at his home in Herrin, IL.

Virgil owned and operated Lukens Refrigeration for 46 years in Herrin. He retired in 1996 from the Carbondale Clinic as the Maintenance Supervisor.

Virgil was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.

Virgil was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the U.S.S. Yorktown during the Korean War.

Virgil loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed carving wood duck decoys. He served 25 years as a board member of the Herrin Booster Club earning the Herrin Mayor’s Award. He was also active with the Herrin Civic Center and the Williamson County Programs on Aging and the National Hunting and Fishing Days. His family always came first, he was always willing to help his sons and grandchildren.

Virgil was born February 16, 1931 in Massac County, IL to Glen and Gladys (Korte) Lukens.

Virgil married Delene Marlow on August 12, 1955 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.

He is also survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Pam Lukens of Herrin, IL and Michael Lukens of Johnston City, IL; four grandchildren, Emily Lukens, Zach Lukens and his wife Jamie, Tyler Lukens, and Erin Lukens; two great grandchildren, Porter and Everly; two brothers and sister-in-law, Geary Lukens of Herrin and Lindell and Julie Lukens of Herrin; two sisters and brother-in-law, Sue Boles of Marion, IL and Karen and Terry Stone of Pittsburg, IL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Louis and Sheila Marlow of Energy, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Wayne Lukens; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Johnny Simich; and brother-in-law, Jackie Boles.
